The User-Generated Content (UGC) program is one of Roblox’s most significant expansions of the platform’s creative economy. It allows approved creators to design and sell their own 3D accessories directly in the Roblox catalog.
How the Program Started
Before UGC, only Roblox itself could create catalog items. In 2019, Roblox began inviting select creators to test UGC accessories, primarily hats and hair. The program expanded over subsequent years to include layered clothing, faces, and body parts, eventually opening to more creators through an application process.
How to Apply
To apply for UGC creator status, you need to demonstrate 3D modeling skills (a portfolio helps), agree to the UGC Creator Terms, and pass Roblox’s review process. Applicants are evaluated on the quality of their existing work and their standing in the community. The process is competitive but accessible to dedicated creators.
Creating UGC Items
Most UGC items are created in Blender, the free open-source 3D modeling software. Roblox provides detailed technical specifications — polygon limits, texture resolution, and rigging requirements — on their DevForum. Items must fit within these specs to be approved. The modeling community on the DevForum is exceptionally helpful for new creators.
Royalties and Revenue
When your UGC item sells in the catalog, Roblox pays out 30% of the Robux purchase price to the creator. The remaining 70% goes to Roblox. Top UGC creators earn hundreds of thousands of Robux monthly from popular items, and these earnings are DevEx-eligible, creating a real revenue stream from virtual fashion design.
