Roblox Studio is the free game development environment included with every Roblox account. Whether you want to build a simple obby or a complex RPG, Studio is where it all begins. This guide walks you through the essential panels and gets you ready to publish your first place.
Installing and Opening Studio
Download Roblox Studio from the official Roblox website by clicking “Create” in the top navigation. Once installed, sign in with your Roblox account credentials. You’ll be greeted by a template picker — choose “Baseplate” for a clean start.
The Interface at a Glance
Studio’s interface has four key areas: the Viewport (your 3D canvas), the Explorer panel (your scene hierarchy), the Properties panel (settings for selected objects), and the Toolbox (a library of pre-made assets). Spend ten minutes clicking around each panel before building anything — understanding what’s where saves hours of frustration later.
Your First Part
In the Home tab of the ribbon, click the Part button. A gray cube appears in the Viewport. Use the Move, Scale, and Rotate tools (keyboard shortcuts: W, E, R) to position it. In the Properties panel, you can change its color, material (Neon glows, SmoothPlastic is clean), and whether it can be collided with or anchored in place.
Testing and Publishing
Press F5 or the Play button to test in Studio. When you’re happy, click File > Publish to Roblox. Set your game’s name, description, and thumbnail. New games are private by default — toggle it to Public when you’re ready for players. Congratulations: you’re a Roblox developer.
